SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT (WAVE OF CHANGE PROJECT)

Our project is called ‘Wave of Change Project’. This project is about our group of 14 people going to Bagan Lalang beach and clean the area from trash and make sure the environment is in a great condition. There are 3 stages in this project which are the planning/preparation before project day, during the project day and after the project finished.  Planning/preparation stage             Before we decided to do the ‘Wave of Change Project’, we were actually considering other project like going to secondary school in KL area to held event about civil engineering with the main focus was to give exposure to the secondary school student about the civil engineering field.      Participating in the social engagement project of cleaning Pantai Bagan Lalang has been an incredibly emotional and transformative experience for me. From the very beginning, as we embarked on the preparations, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. The research and planning stages were crucial, but they also made me realize the enormity of the task at hand. As we gathered supplies and assigned roles, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation and responsibility.      During the event itself, my emotions were a whirlwind. Seeing the beach strewn with litter was disheartening, but as our team and other volunteers began working together, a deep sense of camaraderie emerged. Every piece of trash we picked up and every conversation we had with beachgoers resonated deeply within me. The connection I felt with nature and the community was profound.   PLANNING PHASE Our team had well planned sessions during the planning stage, demonstrating our dedication to professionalism and effectiveness. We understood the importance of clearly defining each member's tasks and responsibilities in order to maintain optimal organisation and effective coordination throughout the project's planning and execution. Firdaus was elected as our respected group leader through a voting process, demonstrating our commitment to effective leadership and decision-making. The first plan was going to a secondary school to spread the knowledge of civil engineering among secondary school students. We would have few activities for the students such as quiz and bridge building. However, due to the weather and permission issue, we were not able to proceed with this plan.   Planning/ Preparation Stage To be honest, I was quite stressed before embarking on this project. The thought of managing it amidst a hectic semester filled with never-ending lab reports and assignments was overwhelming. Furthermore, I found it frustrating that while students from other faculties were allowed to conduct their projects entirely online, we were required to physically carry out ours. It seemed unfair, as they could organize webinars or talks from the comfort of their homes while our group had to tackle beach cleaning. However, after discussing our concerns with our lecturer, Dr. Tan, we were relieved to receive his permission to proceed with the beach cleaning project, which we aptly named "Wave of Change." Preliminary preparations For the Preliminary preparation, our team prepared several activities proposals that are possible and at first we decided to have a talk at any high school but due to time and some issues none of the schools accepted our request . We are only able to carry out our second proposal which is to clean a beach. Our team has several online meetings to discuss the possible location of the beach, activities on the beach and also our overall budget. At last we came out with our location which is the Bagan Lalang Beach and we decided to go there by the cars of our team members. As I contemplate the social engagement project that took place at Pantai Bagan Lalang, I discover that it has been a deeply fulfilling experience consisting of three distinct stages: the preliminary preparations, the actual event, and subsequent reflections. Our main objective was to ensure that every aspect of the project would be well-planned and executed effectively. Instead of creating social media accounts, our team invested time in researching various beaches to determine the most suitable location for our project.
