LAI XIN YI (U2103191)
My name is Lai Xin Yi (U2103191) from group 4. For me, I think that this Change of Wave project is carried out successfully. We have carried out the activity on Sunday, 28 May 2023.
This is my self-reflection for this beach cleaning and recycling project, course GIG1005 Social Engagement.
(i) Preparation Stage
We had several meetings and proposed 2 plans for our projects initially. The first plan was going to a secondary school to spread the knowledge of civil engineering among secondary school students. We would have few activities for the students such as quiz and bridge building. However, due to the weather and permission issue, we were not able to proceed with this plan. However, I’m so glad that we had proposed a plan b just in case plan a is not applicable. We informed our advisor, Dr Tan regarding this issue and Dr Tan agreed to proceed with plan b. For the proposal, I was in charge of the budget part. However, due to unfamiliarity with transportation and petrol fee, I had set a budget of RM100 for round trips. The location of beach, Pantai Bagan Lalang is only 57 km from the university. After the explanation from my friend who drives, I have reduced the budget for it. From the preparation stage, I realised that teamwork is important because we had several meetings before the day to make sure everything is on track. Besides, I also learned that it’s good for us to always prepare a plan b so that we would not panic if our original work does not work at the last minute.
(ii) Event day
I was a little tired because I donated blood one day before. However, I think that I am able to make it because I did rest well and drink more water before. We gathered at the biomedical foyer at 7am before departure. However, not everyone was gathered on time and this caused some delay. After everyone was here, our group leader, Firdaus gave a short briefing to us. We departed from UM after the short briefing. I had so much fun in the car while on the way to the beach because I got to talk with my friends and the view along the journey was fascinating.
When we reached the beach, I could see many people were camping beside the beach. I was sad as I could see many plastic bottles, food waste and others scattered on the beach. After the task distribution, we were divided into a few groups to start cleaning up the beach. We were wearing hand gloves during cleaning to ensure hygiene. We were so tired due to hot weather and the amount of rubbish on the beach.
Beside picking up rubbish, we had interviews with some of the citizens who were camping. I was so surprised that they were all friendly and willing to support us without hesitation. One of the citizens even treated us a cincau drink because the weather was hot. From the interview session, I had learned a lot from their opinions regarding the importance of beach cleanliness.
After a few hours of hard work, we decided to proceed with our recycling project. We had assorted the waste according to their categories such as paper, plastic and glass. This action is important as it can reduce the burden of landfills and further reduce the amount of waste in the environment. In addition, we had produced a diy water filter using recycled materials such as plastic bottles.
(iii) Post-event
Beach cleaning is an important activity that helps preserve and protect our coastal environments. After participating in a beach cleaning event, taking the time to reflect on the experience can provide valuable insights and lessons. I’m so happy because I can contribute my effort on the beach cleaning. From this activity, I have learned the importance of beach cleanliness and the importance of awareness spreading among citizens. I would say that this project is carried out successfully and everyone has learned a lot. Through this project, I learned that teamwork is important to complete a task. Everyone needs to communicate to each other and exchange ideas to make the project a success. I’m very grateful because this social engagement benefits me and provides me such a incredible chance to protect the environment.
